The College of Production & Operations Management (COPOM) has emphasized the need for organizations to promote professional education, training and development of their employees.
Speaking at a workshop recently organized for Production and Operations Managers in Lagos, the Provost and Dean of Post-Graduate Studies, College of Production & Operations Management, Dr.Olaniyi Opanuga said organizations would be investing in their present and future by emphasizing professional training and development. Participants included those who were undergoing the Professional Diploma, Professional Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) Programmes and other participants sponsored by their employers.
“It is very crucial that those who are responsible for managing production and operations do not lack the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to deliver. Unfortunately, many organizations in the country implement cost reduction plans starting with the cutting of training budget which would in turn back fire. Management often rely on poorly trained and unprofessional production and operations managers to train their subordinates thereby transferring and spreading ignorance and outdated operations management practices across the organization”
According to Dr Opanuga, the focus of COPOM on current world class operations management best practices were to enable Nigerian industries compete favourably in the global market place.
